Great is Thy Faithfulness is not only the title of this book, it is also the enduring theme of
Bernice Foss’ life. As a young student at Columbia Bible College in 1950, Bernice felt God calling her to serve Him as a missionary in Africa. Without hesitation, this young
woman from a small town in central Maine embarked on a journey to answer His call. For over thirty-six years she served in the Belgian Congo (later Zaire), teaching, discipling and encouraging her beloved African students to cultivate a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. Bernice knew the faithfulness of God on a first hand, daily basis as she saw the work go forward, often against great odds. Serving through the years of the country’s struggle for independence meant keeping a bag packed at all times for the hurried evacuations which she experienced several times. It meant dealing with new government dictates that threatened to curb the work of the missionaries. Yet, in each circumstance, God’s faithfulness continued. Although her final term was riddled with medical problems, Bernice saw her time of service in Africa to completion. At the end of her years of missionary service, she came home facing an ongoing struggle with cancer. Over time, God led her in to what she calls her “bonus years” of teaching at New England Bible College in South Portland, Maine.
This is the inspiring story of a modest woman who has touched the lives of many people by living her steadfast belief in God’s faithfulness. As a pebble tossed into a lake sends out ever-widening circles, so the circles of blessings extending from her life continue to touch lives around the world today.
